What "IoT" actually means on a ranch
Internet of Things, stripped of marketing language: small devices that measure something and send the result to your phone over the internet.
For a ranch, that translates to:
- Tank levels reported every few minutes
- Gate open/close events triggering text alerts
- Rain gauge data showing exact rainfall by pasture
- Feeder levels reporting daily
- Temperature, wind, and freeze data per location
That's it. There's no AI, no "cloud," no "big data" — just sensors that text you when something happens.
What it actually saves you
Time
The 30-minute round trip to check the back tank. The 45-minute drive to verify a gate. The dawn drive to check feeders before a hunt. These add up to hundreds of hours per year on most operations. Sensors give you that time back.

- "Smart cattle" — most of what's claimed here is just RFID with an app
How to evaluate ranch IoT products
Three questions:
- Does it work where your sensors need to be? If the answer involves cell coverage, ask hard questions.
- What happens when the company goes out of business? If your $5,000 hardware becomes a brick, that's a problem.
- What's the total cost over 5 years? Hardware plus ongoing service.
